2021 Acura TLX Type S Release Date and Specs

In the past couple of months, we have the opportunity to see numerous spy shots and reports regarding the 2021 Acura TLX Type S. Yet, we still can’t confirm when, or will the new TLX come with a Type S badge. One thing is for sure – the new model will be more powerful than the standard version.

Below is the review of the things we currently know about this vehicle. It’s not much, but we will update this review every time we heard something new and relevant. So, while we wait for more official news from the company, let’s go through some of the features, shall we?

What Will 2021 Acura TLX Type S Look Like?

Although the heavy camouflage covers most of the vehicle’s design, we can clearly see the influence of the Types S Concept underneath. The leaked spy shots provide the inside view as well. Therefore, we can see a little bit of the dashboard in a making. We assume that the 2021 Acura TLX Type S will use the same infotainment system as the regular version.

But, one thing that may get a redesign is a steering wheel. Also, we notice what may be the camera button at the end of the dash. Probably some kind of 360-degree feature, like on the RDX model. The similarities with the RDX don’t stop there.

The instrument panel and the central console may have similar design cues as well. We expect to see the True Touchpad Interface, and volume controls on the center console. The front daytime running lights look almost identical as those on the Type S Concept. Still, the rear taillights are not as angular. We expect that the upcoming vehicle will get longer wheelbase, and to grow over the current dimensions.

Specs

At the moment, we don’t have the precise information about the engine that will power the 2021 Acura TLX Type S. But, we think that the company will use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit. Yep, the same type of engine that is in the RDX model. This powertrain can produce 272 hp, and 280 pound-feet of torque.

The power will be sent to front-or all four wheels via the 10-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, the other option is the turbo V6 drivetrain. The company is currently developing this engine, and it may come together with torque-vectoring SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive). The standard TLX brings two engine options.

The first one is a 2.4-liter inline-four powerplant, good for 206 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque. This type of unit is pretty special because it includes the industry’s first 8-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission with Torque Converter. One of the main advantages of this gearbox is its lightweight. That helps to make the handling more agile and better economy ratings.

The additional engine choice is a highly potent 3.5-liter mill. It makes 290 hp with a 9-speed automatic transmission and V6 direct fuel injection. An extra feature that comes with this engine is the dynamic Sequential SportShift paddles.

2021 Acura TLX Type S Release Date and Price

Last time we saw the Type S model with Acura TL back in 2008. Now, almost thirteen years after, the company is ready to pin another Type S badge. However, the precise release date is still unknown.

We expect that the company will first release the regular TLX version. Shortly after, we will see the 2021 Acura TLX Type S on the market as well. The price of the standard model starts at $40,395. The destination charge is included in the sum. So, the Type S will probably come at a higher price. The starting figure may easily go over $45K.

    • Hello Joseph! According to the reports, the TLX will feature a twin-turbocharged V6 engine. We assume that the V6 unit will be capable to generate power similar to Audi S4, and Mercedes-AMG C43. So, expect to see something between 350-360 hp.
