2021 Acura MDX Redesign, Release Date, and Type-S

2021 Acura MDX Redesign

2021 Acura MDX is a luxury seven-seater SUV and a company’s representative in the crowded mid-size class. The ongoing generation of MDX debut back in 2014, but the Japanese carmaker keeps up with the updates regularly, to keep the model fresh and competitive. The most recent facelift occurred in 2017, and the year after, Acura presented the updated infotainment system. Also, the 2019 version adds a sporty A-Spec version.

Still, by the modern-day standards in the industry, the upcoming model should appear soon as the nex-gen version. Recently, we had a chance to spot something that looks like an MDX prototype. Still, our sources report that it could be the performance Type-S version as well. In the meantime, Acura has officially confirmed the production of the Type-S performance model. This version will probably come with the new turbo V6 unit.

Moreover, the leaked spy photos show the new design approach for the exterior, although Acura says that the images are conceptual renderings inspired by the Precision Concept design.

2021 Acura MDX Redesign

Although the Japanese automaker didn’t officially confirm that the spy photos show the new generation of 2021 Acura MDX, we expect that the forthcoming model will carry similar styling. The exterior design is in line with the Precision Concept, and some elements and details are borrowed from the recently refreshed RDX as well.

So, the new model will be more expressive, with robust design in combination with elegant curves and smooth lines. Also, the front part of the vehicle gets some cosmetics treatment, with refined grille and headlights. The grille appears very similar to the RDX, while the lights are thinner with a more modern touch.

Furthermore, the front bumper adds to the defined and modern overall appearance. The profile of the vehicle will keep a similar silhouette, but with noticeable character line and fenders’ sculpting. On top of that, the Type-S version will add even more aggressive design with unique bumpers, wheels, quad exhaust setup, and exclusive trim pieces. As for the cabin, 2021 MDX will get a brand-new instrument cluster and ambient lighting, which will correspond to the selected driving mode.

The available driving modes will be Normal, Comfort, Slippery, Lift, Sport, Sport+, Snow, and Personal Mode. Also, we expect an updated infotainment system as well as the leather upholstery and crash avoidance systems available for the entry-level model.

Engine

So far, the leaked information regarding 2021 Acura MDX does not reveal much about the engine room. However, the company announced possible mechanics and structural upgrades for the next generation of the mid-size SUV. For instance, Acura stated that the Type-S version would use a powerful, turbocharged V6 unit with i-VTEC, all-wheel steering, and Super Handling AWD system.

Moreover, this engine will be connected to a refined 10-speed automatic transmission. This combination should provide significantly more power than the current V6 powertrain. However, the standard version will probably deploy a 3.5-liter V6 powertrain, with some improvements, of course.

The current engine is good for 290 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. Also, expect to see the Sport Hybrid model with a similar setup as before. The hybrid will combine a smaller V6 with three electric motors, and a 7-speed automatic gearbox. The total output will be around 321 hp, with a combined fuel economy of 27 mpg.

When Will the 2021 Acura MDX Will Be Released?

2021 Acura MDX is still in the developing phase. So, the precise info regarding the release date and price are still unknown. But, we assume that the new model of the mid-size three-row luxury crossover will be ready for showrooms sometime in 2020.

The starting price of 2021 MDX will probably be in the mid-$40K range. The main competitors of the upcoming model will be the Buick Enclave, Infiniti QX60, and Lexus RX.
